Uganda: One body

As well as the two classroom murals, we painted a small mural in the staff room.  It was near the end of our trip so we had just under a day left to draw out and complete this piece.  This mural was like a cross between the two previous murals in that it was partly educational as it used a diagram of the human body, but it also spoke a clear deeper message out to the staff, reminding them that they must work together as part of a team.

Uganda:  Life and Light

The second mural we painted was not an educational piece - it was 'something beautiful for the sake of being beautiful' as Carla put it.  When we had been discussing and praying about what murals to paint, Carla had felt it was important for one of them to 'just be beautiful' with no other purpose.  This concept might be hard to grasp, especially for some of the people for whom the mural was painted - why waste valuable wall space with just an image rather than using it to promote education, especially when resources are scarce?  However, in being seemingly 'non-educational', we found it caused a more powerful reaction than all the other images we painted and promoted the most important message you could ever hear.

When we were in Uganda we took a Monday morning off from mural painting and we did some teaching instead.  The children were split into two classes, Carla took one half for letter writing and James and I took the other half for some drawing projects.  We worked with the first class then swapped with Carla and repeated the projects with the second class.  The children in each class had ages which spread right from about 3 or 4 to 15!  So within each group we split them into a younger and older half and gave them different lessons to do.

The second mural we worked on was based around the water cycle.  This classroom had a small blackboard that would hang on the wall allocated for the mural so in choosing a cycle based image we were able to make sure that all the key areas of the mural would be kept visible around the board.  We placed sky and sea behind where the board would be hung so that if it was removed it would just look like a completed landscape.  Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the mural with the board hung up as the paint was still a bit wet when we finished, but you can see it would fit just to the left of the mountains in the big square of sky.
