"Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written
in your book
before one of them came to be."

-Psalm 139:16

I have recently rediscovered my love of sewing with a sewing machine.  Due to the way some Cafe Bless International projects are developing, I have been lead to dust off my sewing machine and begin relearning how to use it all over again.  It has been years.  We will soon have a small base from which Cafe Bless will be able to run regular craft workshops and having a base of our own means we will be able to store and set up items for use that, up to this point, we haven't been able to.  The list could include items like sewing machines and an iron, meaning that we could increase the creative learning opportunities that we can offer as well as teaching larger projects.  It's a very exciting turn of events but in order to teach others how to confidently use a sewing machine, you have to be very confident using one yourself!

The Studio:  What's the latest?

You may have noticed things have been a little quiet round this part of the internet recently...but I assure you I'm still here!  I'm just going to dive right on into the latest news...

Recently I've been flitting between painting in the studio and creating a range of new handcrafts for Café Bless.  This week the crafts came in sewing form as you can see on the left.  I completed a flock of 10 birds, each unique in colour and style.  They are made of embroidered felt and make a cute addition to any space! You can hang them on doorhandles, noticeboards...in your car!  We'll be having a craft sale to raise funds for the work of Café Bless at the start of April and the birds will be there along with many other goodies.  Café Bless is a small charity that works around the world to improve conditions for people facing severe poverty...check out the website for the latest news and ideas on how you can support them too!

As mentioned, I've been doing some painting in the studio and here is a sneak preview of a new piece that I've just started on.  I have been continuing to think about who God is.  In the last set of paintings I worked on, they were all themed around a single characteristic of God (God as the Gardener), but my most recent paintings have so far focused on different qualities.  I've almost completed an image that I painted whilst reflecting on God's goodness, and the image you can see to the right is the development of thoughts initially sparked by thinking about his holiness and the trinity.  It's possible these two images will in turn lead to multiple images based on each theme.  I intend to write about the works more fully soon - once I've better unraveled my thoughts about them!

Lastly, I've also been doing a little bit of experimenting this week!  Aslongside making handcrafts to sell, another way I work alongside Café Bless is I keep a lookout for new craft skills that could be passed on to others as a way to help them create their own work and potentially provide people with an income.  I had great fun experimenting with paper clay at the weekend and thought it has real potential as a craft skill to teach others as not only can you mould it into a variety of items, the materials needed to make it are easy to source and it's actually a great way to recycle old paper!  It needs a little further investiagtion...but watch this space!

That's a run though of my week in regards to all things creative.  I have also now joined instagram so you can find me by searching for art_soli_deo_gloria.
It's a place where people can stay up to date with my work throughout the week but I'll also be using it as a way to communicate upcoming events like craft sales and workshops.

The House of Hope

The House of Hope is a small scale project run by a few people in Kolkata.  A lady, along with some helpers, opens her house to the street children and provides them with a safe environment where they can receive food, shelter, education and health care as well as the most important gift which is love!  Most of the children she cares for still live on the streets though she has been able to offer seven children a place in her home full-time, before they lived with her, they too lived on the street.

As well as looking after children full time and opening her house to become a day centre, she also supports the local young mothers of the area.  Often these young mothers are aged somewhere between thirteen and seventeen.  It is an Indian run project which is great because it means it is built on personal relationships and there are no language or cultural barriers to get in the way.  The House of Hope is an amazing project and it makes a huge difference to so many people who would be otherwise unsupported and lacking the care they so desperately need.
